Varun Kathait is an associate at Katz, Smith & Chwat PC, handling all stages of Federal and State criminal and civil tax matters. He counsels clients on audits, tax controversies, penalty issues, and foreign and domestic voluntary disclosures. He also assists in advising clients about the tax consequences of corporate, partnership, estate and gift taxation matters.
Varun has a strong accounting background which helps him in his work with both corporate and tax clients. He is currently awaiting his CPA license, having passed all four sections of the NYS Uniform CPA Examination. Prior to beginning his legal career, he was a Senior Accountant in a public accounting firm.
In addition to his accounting background, Varun gained valuable experience in the field of estate administration and probate as a Fellow with the Surrogate’s Court of Nassau County, where he worked closely with Hon. Edward W. McCarty, III on all aspects of Surrogate’s Court proceedings. This immersive experience provided him with invaluable insight into the workings of the Surrogate’s Court, its procedures and handling of estate tax filings.
Varun first worked with Neil Katz and Lara Chwat as a legal intern with Katz, Bernstein & Katz, LLP in 2009 while attending college in Atlanta. After graduating from Emory University with a B.A. in Economics, he returned to New York to attend Hofstra University Law School, where he served as the Treasurer of the Hofstra Business Law Society and as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Coordinator. As a member of the Community and Economic Development Clinic at Hofstra Law School, Varun provided transactional assistance to nonprofits, community-based organizations and microenterprises in low-income communities in and around Nassau County. After his years working in accounting, he started his legal career by returning to work with Neil and Lara at Katz, Smith & Chwat, PC.
